Wednesday, January 14, 2015, 2:39 PM - Ten people are dead after a prison bus slid off an icy road in Texas Wednesday and landed in the path of a moving train.

The bus was carrying fifteen people in the Austin area when it skidded off a slippery overpass, slamming into a freight train, Reuters reports.

Two correctional officers and eight inmates were killed. Four other passengers were taken to the hospital in critical condition. A fifth passenger is listed as being in serious condition.

"It’s with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers," Brad Livingston, executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice told reporters.

The male inmates were being transferred to a low-security facility.

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety say the accident was weather-related.

Two of the train's cars were damaged in the accident. The crew members on board the train were not injured.
