So much for balmy: Victoria out-snows most Canadian cities

Erin Wenckstern
Meteorologist

Friday, November 3, 2017, 7:11 AM - One of Canada's mildest cities just recorded its first snowfall of the season -- far ahead of other cities that are used to getting their first flakes by now.

As of November 3rd, Victoria, British Columbia, has out-snowed the big players in eastern Canada, a long list that includes Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax and Moncton.

An early season Arctic front surged south this week in a pattern more typical of January, bringing temperatures near the freezing mark and widespread snowfall into southern and Interior British Columbia. Rain began to change over to snow Thursday across Vancouver Island and the lower mainland at higher elevations, but into the evening hours, temperatures dropped to the freezing mark as outflow winds picked up from the Fraser River Valley, bringing snowfall all the way down into metro Vancouver and Victoria.

As of early Friday morning, Victoria International Airport (YYJ) recorded 7 cm of snow, making this its earliest snowfall since 1991, according to The Weather Network's meteorologist Tyler Hamilton. In a complete contrast, mild air over Atlantic Canada will make it feel closer to the mid-20's to end the week.

But this isn't the end of winter weather for Vancouver Island, forecasters are monitoring a second low pressure system that will bring a second shot of snow this weekend.
