Trio of storms swirls in the Pacific. Get to know them, here

Monday, July 24, 2017, 2:04 PM - Though the Atlantic Ocean is quiet as far as hurricanes are concerned (so far this week, anyway), the Pacific is another story.

The region currently hosts not one, but three storms of tropical strength -- Greg, Irwin and Hilary, named in alphabetical order based on when they first achieved tropical storm status. It's not unheard of to have this many storms existing in the sprawling Pacific at the same time, and past gatherings have involved even stronger storms, but it's still not an everyday occurrence.

They vary in strength. The strongest, Hurricane Hilary, is the one with the most strengthening ahead. As of Monday morning, the storm boasted winds up to 128 km/h, and was a category 1 hurricane, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says it is likely to reach major hurricane status within the coming days, meaning at least Category 3, with winds stronger than 178 km/h.

Fortunately, the storm is not forecast to go near land, though the center expects it to at least retain hurricane status by the weekend, though down from its peak.

The other two storms in the mix are similarly no threat to land, and aren't likely to reach the same strength as Hilary.

Tropical Storm Irwin is expected to reach at least Category 1 status by Tuesday morning, and retain hurricane strength until late in the week. Tropical Storm Greg, meanwhile, is not expected to reach that threshold, and will likely weaken to a tropical depression by Thursday.
