Tuesday, October 30, 2018, 3:39 PM - Arctic Species specialist Brandon Laforest has captured now-viral video of two sperm whales near Pond Inlet in Canada’s northern Nunavut territory.

Laforest, who works for the World Wildlife Fund-Canada, shot the footage on September 27 while on an expedition that's part of the organization’s Arctic program.

Sperm whales prefer ice-free water, which is what makes their presence so far north rare, according to WWF-Canada.

It also says shrinking sea ice makes Arctic waters more attractive to the whales.

Sperm whales are considered a vulnerable species, after being hunted to near-extinction during the whaling era, which occurred between the 17th and 20th centuries.
