At least one dead as winds pummel southern Ontario

Friday, May 4, 2018, 6:45 PM - At least one person has been killed and another hospitalized with life-threatening injuries as a powerful storm moved through southern Ontario Friday.

Halton Police say a tree fell on two tree removal contractors at 20 Side Road and Fourth Line in the Milton/Halton Hills area.

"One suffered catastrophic injuries at the scene, and was pronounced there," Halton Police Staff Sgt. Jeff Foster told The Weather Network. "The second has been transported to Hamilton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries after the fire department extricated him from the tree that was pinning them down."

Foster says the storm has resulted in widespread damage and down trees, with one tree even falling on the fire truck that responded to this particular incident, and warned drivers to stay safe, and for people to stay off the road if possible.

“I can’t even count the number of roads that trees or debris or hydro poles have been blocking the path. I just would advise that people, if they are already on the roads, drive safe and do the best they can to make it home safe and avoid driving altogether once they get to their destination, because even when the wind stops, there's going to be hours and hours of cleanup remaining."

The storm, whose winds have exceeded 100 km/h in many areas, has left more than 100,000 people without power across the province, forced the closure of the Burlington Skyway, and inflicted damage to homes and properties.
