Monday, August 1, 2016, 8:39 PM - Police say a 52-year-old man died after being stuck by lightning amid violent storms that hammered parts of southwestern Ontario with torrential rain Sunday afternoon.

Environment Canada issued a weather advisory for much of the southwest Sunday, including the Greater Toronto Area, cautioning that funnel clouds may be sighted.

The agency dropped all of those advisories by 8:30 p.m., though some funnel cloud sightings were reported, and some communities in the southwest reported heavy downpours.

The victim, identified as Dave Johnson of Tillsonburg, Ont., located about 50 km southeast of London, was mowing his lawn when he was struck by lightning, Ontario Provincial Police say. First responders attempted to revive the man, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Johnson was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for several areas Sunday afternoon including, London, Sarnia and Windsor.

The community of Arva, just north of London, received 109 mm of rain, according to the weather agency. Meanwhile, parts of London saw 80 mm and areas between Niagara and Thorold were hit with over 40 mm.

"As has been the case over the past few days, another round of slow moving moisture-laden thunderstorms soaked parts of southwestern Ontario with torrential downpours on Sunday," says Environment Canada. "One round of storms soaked the Aylmer to Niagara areas early Sunday morning. A second episode of storms soaked areas near London Sunday afternoon."

Funnel cloud sightings were also reported near Wanstead, just east of Sarnia.
