Tuesday, June 21, 2016, 4:14 PM - Four hikers died in Arizona over the weekend as temperatures soared above the 40-degree mark, officials have announced.

Two people died while hiking near Phoenix, while the other two died near Tucson amid record high temperatures.

The deaths occurred in four separate instances:

  • Sheriff Paul Babeu told NBC a 25-year-old man died on the Peralta trail Saturday.
  • The following day, a 28-year-old woman died on the Desert Vista Trail during a morning hike. The woman, who worked as a personal trainer, was so overcome by the extreme heat she died despite having plenty of water and being treated immediately by a doctor in her hiking group.
  • Later that day a man and a woman in their early 20s left the trail in Pima County without bringing enough water. The man was rescued by helicopter, but the woman died.
  • One man from Germany has also died.

"It really shows how critical this heat can be and how it can really sneak up on you," Phoenix Fire spokesperson Capt. Larry Subervi said, according to the Arizona Republic.

"When we deal with temperatures like this, it can just really be unpredictable how your body is going to respond."

Health experts say the best thing to do when temperatures are scorching is stay home. If that's unavoidable, it's recommended you pack lots of sunscreen, more water than you think you'll need, and wear a hat and light, protective clothing.

Extreme temperatures are expected to continue into next week across the region.
