Friday, September 4, 2015, 7:22 AM - Environment Canada issued the first snowfall warning of the season for parts of southern Alberta Thursday evening.

Rain that developed changed into snow as temperatures dropped close to zero. Nordegg, which sat at minus 4oC Thursday morning, and Grande Cache regions were under the warning. Environment Canada projected local snowfall amounts of 5 cm or more. The warning was dropped shortly after 4:30 a.m. local time Friday.

A pattern change in place for Canada's West is creating a dip in temperatures and the onset of winter-like conditions ahead.

Alberta's high-elevation areas above 1200 metres can expect to see rain and snow mixing through the weekend as temperatures dip into the teens due to an upper-level trough.

Frost advisories were issued Wednesday for areas south of Edmonton in the Foothills -- particularly Rocky Mountain House and Airdrie. The advisories were dropped by Thursday.

Towns and roadways at higher elevations are more likely to see snowfall accumulations. Wet snow hit high elevations in B.C. and Alberta Thursday.
