WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Damaging winds ease Sunday
  • Second system to bring new round of rain but less intense winds for Sunday
  • Avalanche risk remains elevated this weekend

DAMAGING WINDS CONTINUE

The seemingly relentless winds have battered the B.C. coast and triggered widespread power outages throughout the end of the week. Though there was a brief break on Saturday, the winds will one again pick up with a second low pressure system approaching the coast.

"Strong southeast winds will increase to 60 to 90 km/h over exposed coastal sections early this evening ahead of another approaching Pacific frontal system," a wind warning from Environment Canada reads. "These winds will ease Sunday afternoon as the front pushes to the south."

This next frontal system will also bring more rain, with another 30-50 mm for the western Lower Mainland, and 100+mm for higher elevations of Vancouver Island.

The morning commute will not differ much from Sunday's rain, as much of the coast can expect similar amounts of precipitation. Drivers are encouraged to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions as visibility could suddenly be reduced.

AVALANCHE WARNINGS ISSUED

Individuals that have plans to head into the backcountry this weekend might consider rescheduling, as public avalanche warnings have been issued.

The warning is expected to remain in place until the end of the day on Sunday, as snow is expected to intensify until then.

Majority of the impacted regions have received 'Considerable' avalanche risk rating.

Freezing levels are expected to climb to 2000 metres or above throughout the week due to several waves of incoming moisture from the subtropics.
