Monday, June 25, 2018, 9:05 PM - Rainfall warnings continue for some regions of Atlantic Canada as up to 70 mm could fall through Tuesday. Looking ahead, eyes are on a potential potent system with tropical influence late week, with a quick shift into HEAT in time for the Canada Day long weekend. More on the storm timing and warm-up, below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wet start to last week of June through Atlantic Canada
  • Several rounds of heavy rain shift through the eastern Maritimes and Newfoundland in particular
  • Well-below seasonal temperatures, followed by major rebound

SOGGY START TO THE WEEK

Rain looks to taper off over Cape Breton overnight into early Tuesday. However, the precipitation will continue for southern Newfoundland, with total amounts of 40 to 70 mm possible by Tuesday night.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," says Environment Canada in the rainfall warning. "Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts."

With brisk northerly winds, much of Newfoundland will be particularly chilly, with highs expected to languish in the single digits for Tuesday. The heavy rain is also set to change over to wet snow for northeastern, central and western parts of the province overnight Monday and Tuesday morning.

St. John's residents will have to wait until Wednesday to climb back into the double-digits.

POTENTIAL TROPICAL INFLUENCE

"A potent system tracks across the region Thursday and Friday with heavy rain likely as the system taps into subtropical/tropical moisture," says Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham. "Ahead of this system, Newfoundland warms up with above seasonal temperatures before a mostly dry pattern in time for the long weekend and heat spreading into the Maritimes."

CANADA DAY WEEKEND: THE HEAT IS ON

Summer hasn't forgotten about Eastern Canada completely, and signs are that the weather will be making amends by later this week - just in time for the Canada Day long weekend.

"We're looking at a much warmer pattern for mid and late week," says Gillham. "Even interior Newfoundland stands to see highs in the mid to upper 20s, and St. John’s should reach the lower 20s."

Gillham adds this pattern should hold going into the long weekend, although there is the risk that a system tracking to the north through Labrador may send another shot of cool air toward Newfoundland for holiday Monday.
