Monday, June 5, 2017, 8:39 PM - Prime Minister Trudeau spent part of World Environment Day checking in with constituents along the Niagara River in an unorthodox way, take a look below for more.

Taking to the water in a kayak decorated in red and white, the Prime Minister paddled up to at least one excited family to chat about climate change and the environment.

Twitter user Carrie Robinson (@carrierobinson_) caught the PM as he approached her family's house to speak with her parents.

The trip down the Niagara was just one stop on Trudeau's World Environment Day itinerary. Still in his paddling gear, Trudeau held a press conference in Niagara-on-the-Lake, reaffirming Canada's commitment to protecting the global environment.

"Canada will not back down from our commitment to fight climate change. And we are not alone," the prime minister said, according to a report from the St. Catharines Standard. "Around the world, nearly every country is on our side. Business is on our side. Science is on our side. And together, our efforts will make a difference."

Trudeau touched on the same topics as part of his appearance on the Live with Kelly and Ryan show, which was filming in Niagara Falls.

Canada was chosen as the host of World Environment Day 2017; a United Nations celebration that happens on June 5th every year. A different country is chosen to be the global host each year, and that country "helps highlight the environmental challenges it faces, and supports the effort to address them," according to the official website.

The first World Environment Day was in 1974.
