Tens of thousands of sharks gather near Florida beach

Wednesday, February 17, 2016, 4:11 PM - The conditions were calm near Palm Beach, Florida in early February, but the water was far from clear.

That's because tens of thousands of black tip sharks were spotted dotting the shoreline by a Florida biological sciences professor conducting an aerial survey.

Dr. Stephen Kajiur of Florida Atlantic University says they were "a stone's throw" from the beach.

"It's so cool," he told Florida news channel CBS12.

"There are literally tens of thousands of sharks a stone's throw away from our shoreline. You could throw a pebble and literally strike a shark. They are that close."

The group will eventually migrate south to warmer waters.

Luckily, the sharks are relatively harmless. According to Dr. Kajiur, black tips are skittish and will usually scatter and swim away when approached.
