Freezing rain, snow for Prairies ahead of steep temp. drop

Monday, January 30, 2017, 6:35 PM - Strong winds, freezing rain and snow continue across the eastern Prairies as a low pressure system slides through region.

Meanwhile, temperatures are plummeting across the Prairies, with a 15-degree drop in the forecast for some areas by Tuesday.

Calgary, Alta., broke a record Sunday with a daytime high of 13 C. The city is expected to drop to minus 3 C Monday, with temperatures to drop even further into Tuesday.

Weather Highlights

  • Southern Saskatchewan to see up to 6 cm of snow, 5-10 cm for southern Manitoba through Tuesday.
  • Some up-sloping snow possible for extreme southwestern Alberta Monday.
  • Temperatures to drop across Prairies, by Friday daytime highs will be around minus 15 C.

Most freezing rain in southwestern Manitoba and the Red River Valley transitioned to snow Monday morning, with some parts expected to see up to 10 cm through Tuesday.

In Alberta, light upsloping snow is possible for extreme southwestern portions of the province. However, Calgary looks to skip out on the flurries.

Looking ahead, there are no major systems in the forecast for mid-to-late week and into the weekend.

"Looks like Arctic air will not last as originally expected for especially the western Prairies as milder Pacific air spreads into the west, while northwesterly flow continues for the eastern Prairies through the end of the week," said The Weather Network's Dr. Doug Gillham.
