Stray dogs flown to new home in Quebec

Sunday, March 15, 2015, 11:02 AM - Eleven lucky stray dogs are finding a home, more than 600 km away from where they once roamed.

Quebec's Côte-Nord SPCA had more dogs than they could accommodate, but thanks to the Pilots N Paws non-profit organization they have been relocated to the Laurentians where they will find homes.

The organization helps transport animals from overpopulated areas to places that can assist with their adoption.

Four planes took off on Friday carrying the dogs to their new location. A fifth plane that was expected to depart wasn't able to after being iced in.

Lucie Dionne, from the SPCA Côte-Nord took to social media to thank everyone involved.

"Thanks to the pilots Michael, Oliver, Jean-Sebastien and Adrian as well as those that helped them on board," she said.

The veterinarian for the SPCA said much of the Côte-Nord region doesn't have proper access to clinics that can offer spaying and neutering services.

"The fact that people don't sterilize their animals as much here and leave them in the streets is a huge problem," Jennifer Blanchard told CBC News.

Since 2013, Pilots N Paws has helped more than 100 animals in the province.
