Thursday, December 25, 2014, 4:31 PM - A powerful storm hitting Canada has left thousands of people without power on Christmas Day.

Outages were widespread from Ontario to Atlantic Canada.

In Ontario, earlier today Hydro One reported at least 31, 500 customers without power, most of which were in Parry Sound. By 4:30 local time, the outages were less than 10,000.

Moving east, Quebec showed a similar number of outages. As of 11:40 a.m., Quebec had at least 20,000 customers without power, most of which were in Lanaudiere, Monteregie and Laurentides.

The situation seemingly wasn't as bad in Atlantic Canada with about limited outages reported earlier today in New Brunswick, while Prince Edward Island managed to stay in the clear. Newfoundland reported some outages in areas with lots of trees.

    Coming Up

    • Atlantic Canada: It's going to be a wet and windy day for much of the region, with the bulk of the precipitation falling in southeast New Brunswick, western Nova Scotia and along the southwestern shores of Newfoundland.
    • Close to 70 mm is expected for Port-au-Basques. Wind gusts could also reach close to 110 km/h later today for that area.
    • Rain and strong winds throughout the day. Many places will see sustained winds around 60 km/h while parts of Newfoundland could clock speeds upwards of 100 km/h.

    • In Newfoundland and Labrador, Environment Canada issued rainfall, wind and wreckhouse wind warnings. The Postville-Makkovik region had a snowfall warning issued as of 11:30 a.m.
    • Ontario: flurries covered the northern portion of the province but those should move out later today while southern Ontario will continue to feel strong gusts before they ease in the evening.
    • Clearer and cooler conditions are expected over the next few days, although temperatures will still be mostly above seasonal. The next system to keep an eye out for won't come till Saturday, but it will be much weaker. Southern Ontario is looking at less than 10 mm of rain according to latest forecasts.
