Storm chasers encounter Nebraska dust storm

Wednesday, May 21, 2014, 11:54 AM - After a dramatic storm chase that captured two of the incredibly powerful tornadoes that struck Oklahoma in 2013, Storm Hunter Mark Robinson and meteorologist Jaclyn Whittal are back on the road in Tornado Alley.

This time they're also joined by camera operator Michel Millaire.

Despite a much quieter start to the severe weather season, Mark and Jaclyn have already encountered some of Mother Nature's beauty AND fury.

Here's a diary post from Jaclyn on Tuesday recalling their storm chasing day in Nebraska:

Today was a great day. We started in North Platte, NE and we anticipated that the best chance of storms would be either in NE Colorado or SE Wyoming. The short range models showed two cells in the north and two cells in south…we chose to go after the northern action. We never did have to leave Nebraska because we met them half way and chased them east. We traveled west toward the storms. All day the storms seems to cycle up and down…gaining strength, then losing strength (this is normal). We ended up catching up to them in great time and watched them as they moved east very slowly. There were two storms that were high based and had slight rotation on them. but were quite fun to chase. We knew the tornadic threat was slim, but we did get some very strong outflow from one that moved over a dusty field and we got some GREAT video of this..plus we got lots of dust on pretty much every part of our bodies! Michel got some incredible shots of Mark in this dust storm.

After the fun dust storm, we followed the cells east and one of them went tornado warned and the sirens were going off in Mitchel, NE. It did not produce anything so we decided to “core” it because we knew the hail would be pretty small. We were right about this, we got some good visuals outside and inside the car - Michel went out and danced in the hail for the first time.

A rainbow followed through as suspected as the cell moved right over us. It was a good day.

Will Mark and Jaclyn see a tornado Wednesday? NOAA SPC has indicated a 10% risk in eastern Colorado.

Be sure to check back for frequent updates and storm videos from their chase.
