The last (and, arguably, the best) major meteor shower of the year was Saturday night. Have a look at what the astro-shutterbugs managed to snap.

Storify'd: The spectacular Geminids

Sunday, December 14, 2014, 9:52 AM - Talk about bad timing: The peak of the last (and arguably most spectacular) meteor shower of the year happened last night, but due to cloud or fog, most Canadians couldn't get a glimpse.

Not everyone missed out: People in the B.C. Lower Mainland and much of central Alberta had a good vantage point, as would anyone anywhere else who looked skyward through a break in the clouds (provided you were far enough away from the city).

Saturday night was the peak, but the meteors - debris left in the wake of comet 3200 Phaethon as it passes through the solar system - are visible each year from December 7 to December 17.

The good news is, the meteors will still be visible Sunday night into early Monday morning (though not at the peak rate of 120 fireballs per hour, or more), over a wider area of Canada.

As for the show on Saturday night, we've put together a Storify of the best social media shots from around the world. You can find it below. Enjoy!
