Saturday, December 1, 2018, 10:24 AM - Weather statements cover much of Quebec as a potent Colorado low spreads a messy wintry mix across the province this weekend. Travel conditions could be compromised amid the threat for snow and periods of freezing rain. More on the impact and timing, below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Colorado low reaches Ottawa Valley and southern Quebec Saturday evening with wintry mix continuing into Sunday
  • Precipitation will start generally as snow before changing to rain with a period of freezing rain in between
  • Precipitation could be significant over some regions of the Gaspé Peninsula and the Lower North Shore overnight Sunday

A Colorado low with "quite the wing-span" will have impact that unusually stretches across most of the country this weekend. And while the start of the weekend looks pleasant in Quebec, expect conditions to start to deteriorate by Saturday night. Snow, rain and freezing rain are all on the table for many.

"Snow will initially move in Saturday night, but quickly transition to mixing or freezing rain for Gatineau, Montreal and parts of the Eastern Townships early Sunday morning," says Weather Network meteorologist Kelly Sonnenburg. "This is not expected to be a prolonged freezing rain event, a few hours at most, but this could still lead to a thin layer of ice on sidewalks and roads."

Freezing rain will transition to straight rain by Sunday afternoon for most of southern Quebec.

In the Quebec City area, light to moderate snow is expected through Sunday morning and afternoon, but a brief period of freezing rain or ice pellets is possible Sunday evening.

"The system will likely bring a departing shot of mixing or snow through Monday morning, but this precipitation will be relatively light," Sonnenburg adds.

And enjoy the above seasonal temperatures in southern Quebec this weekend, as temperatures are set to plunge back down below seasonal through next week. Several days of sub-zero daytime highs are expected.
