Monday, May 22, 2017, 4:15 PM - A possible waterspout was spotted over Lake Huron late Sunday as powerful storms rolled through southwestern Ontario.

The possible waterspout formed just offshore of Bright's Grove in the Sarnia area, over Lake Huron. Photos of the spout have been making the rounds over Facebook, with one set, featured below, taken by Abbey Kilner.

Kilner told The Weather Network she and some friends were at the beach hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunset in a break in the clouds, when they noticed the clouds beginning to swirl.

"[While] it was forming, the weather wasn't too bad, but around 8:55 the winds started to pick up and get colder by the minute," Kilner said. "When it was forming my first instinct was [that it was] a watersprout."

Environment Canada issued several special weather statements for extreme southwestern Ontario over the course of Sunday evening as the storms moved in from Michigan.

The agency has not confirmed if it was a waterspout, or if it touched down on land to become a tornado.

On Monday, weather scientist and storm chaser Dave Sills tweeted what appeared to be an alternate view of the same system, adding it could possibly have been "more like [a] shelf cloud from water surface to cloud base" rather than a full-blown waterspout.

Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton said Monday the storms that crossed the province Sunday evening where part of what is called a quasi-linear convective system. Such setups, he said, can sometimes be characterized by weak rotation, which can produce weak tornadoes.

Only Environment Canada can confirm a tornado, and then typically only after sending a team to assess the damage on the ground.

Monday, by comparison, was relatively quiet, though forecasters say some unsettled weather beckons for the coming week.
