Friday, July 8, 2016, 10:27 AM - Super typhoon Nepartak made landfall in Taiwan early Friday, hammering the eastern coast with torrential rain and winds up to 240 km/h.
At least three people are dead and over 100 injured, according to the Taiwan Central Emergency Operations Center. More than 16,000 people were evacuated from the worst hit areas, with power cut to about 500,000 homes.
The massive storm has already dumped over 300 mm of rain in some places, flipped cars, tore roofs off buildings and downed numerous trees. A total of 35,800 troops were deployed countrywide to help with relief efforts.

As of Friday morning, Napartak has been downgraded from a super typhoon to a typhoon due to Taiwan's rugged and mountainous terrain. The storm continues to spin in the Taiwan Strait in a west-northwestward direction, with further weakening forecast as it moves toward China.
Social media has lit up with dramatic photos and video of what storm chasers and meteorologists are calling the "near-perfect storm."
