Perfectly-timed lightning and giraffe photo goes viral

Friday, June 17, 2016, 6:33 PM - Russian photographer Julia Sundukova captured a one-in-a-million shot at Namibia's Etosha Park recently. The image -- which is going viral on various social media outlets -- features a group of giraffes, one of which appears to be in the midst of being struck by lightning.
Not to worry though, the giraffe is fine. The offending lightning bolt isn't anywhere near the animals: It's actually way off in the distance.

"The giraffes weren't scared of the thunderstorm – they stood together in unity, whilst lightning struck behind them," Sundukova told the Daily Mail.
She credits the photo to being in the right place at the right time, adding the story behind it is "unforgettable" to her.
Unfortunately, giraffes are at a heightened risk of being hit by lightning, due to their towering height.
Giraffes in zoos tend to be an especially high risk because they're typically the tallest objects in the vicinity unlike in the wild, where the animals are surrounded by much taller trees.
Still, experts say it is quite rare.
