Tuesday, August 21, 2018, 8:54 PM - Strong storms rolled across southern Ontario on Tuesday, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings and road closures at times. We take a look at some of the best-of-the-worst Mother Nature had to offer, along with the aftermath.
STORMY TUESDAY
Tuesday proved to be an active weather day across much of southern and central Ontario as an unusually potent, fall-like system charged through the region. Rainfall was intense at times, especially across southwestern Ontario, through the Niagara Peninsula, and the GTA, as midday clearing added additional heating -- and additional fuel -- for afternoon thunderstorms. And that was in the wake of the initial round of storms that swept through the region during the morning hours, prompting the closure of parts of the Don Valley Parkway (the first of two such closures sparked by ponding water during the day).
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the city of Toronto shortly after 5 p.m. as a large storm cell skimmed along the north shores of Lake Ontario, taking direct aim on the city as it moved northwestward, with heavy rain and intense lightning. Additional warnings popped up for parts of Niagara as the cold front sent the strongest storms of the day through in the early evening hours. By 8 p.m., most watches and warnings west of the GTA had dropped, with those in eastern Ontario expected to fall off through the early overnight hours.
