Saturday, September 5, 2015, 4:34 PM - For one day in September, France will prohibit the use of cars in the streets of downtown Paris as an initiative to combat smog and air pollution.

"Une Journée Sans Voiture," or "A Day Without Cars," will take place on Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., during which the capital city will not permit the use of motor vehicles, aside from emergency vehicles, taxis, and public transit vehicles.

The event was planned by Paris Sans Voiture, a nonprofit environmental organization that hopes to see the occasion become an annual happening. The intention is for pedestrians and cyclists to “reclaim the streets.”

Paris Sans Voiture successfully pitched the idea to Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo in March

The event precedes the United Nations climate change conference, COP21, to take place in Paris this November.
