'Idiots of the century' seen playing in crocodile traps

Tuesday, October 24, 2017, 5:44 PM - In 1859, Charles Darwin published his revolutionary book, On the Origin of Species, in which he discusses his theory of evolution. Part of that theory hinges on the concept of the "survival of the fittest", which roughly means only those with the most physical and/or mental strength survive.
On that note, let's take a look at a series of photos that are going viral on Facebook which feature three men -- who are being dubbed the 'idiots of the century' -- happily swimming in a baited crocodile trap in Queensland, Australia.
The trap resides in a known crocodile habitat. It was set up after a 79-year-old woman with dementia was reportedly killed by a large crocodile earlier this month. That croc was trapped but others are often present in the area.
Australia's Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has launched an investigation into what they're calling "stupid and reckless interference".
"These traps are specifically designed to attract crocodiles and they are deployed in places where a problem crocodile is known to be present," a department spokesperson said in a statement sent to ABC news.
"It is extremely dangerous to interfere with a crocodile trap, regardless of whether or not there is a crocodile within.
Queensland's Environment Minister also weighed in via Twitter:
If convicted, the unidentified men in the photo could be fined up to $15,000.
What would Darwin think?
