Tuesday, June 19, 2018, 6:46 AM - Multiple people have been injured, including children, in a lightning strike in Norfolk County as severe thunderstorms rolled through Ontario Monday.

The injured include three adults, two children and the family dog, according to the Ontario Provincial Police's western region, which said on Twitter the group were struck by lightning at a Main Street address in the community of Courtland, which is a community about 35 km south of Woodstock. The OPP initially said the group included two adults and three children.

In a later update, the OPP said all five received minor injuries.

"We need to take this as a learning lesson that if we are caught out in a storm to make sure that we don't take any type of cover under any large trees," OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk told CBC News. "Please remember that if you are caught out in the open, that lightning generally strikes higher ground and prominent objects...There is no safe place to be outside, so if you hear thunder then it's your warning that you're in striking distance of lightning."

That storm is one of several that have fired up across the southwest, fueled by extreme heat and humidity.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect for much of southwestern Ontario through the day Monday, with severe thunderstorm watches covering much of the rest of the south, including the GTA.

Environment Canada says lightning kills an average 10 people in Canada each year, and injures more than 160.
