Monday, June 27, 2016, 4:27 PM - The American Humane Association (AHA) is investigating following reports that 5 bison were killed during the filming of a Hollywood production in Alberta in April.

The animals were allegedly killed for a scene in "The Solutrean" under the supervision of Alberta animal wrangler John Scott.

If the reports prove to be true, charges or fines could be laid. AHA guidelines state that animals cannot be injured or killed "for the sake of a film production."

Scott has previously worked as a wrangler for several Hollywood films, including: "The Revenant", "Lord of the Rings" and "Legends of the Fall."

Scott confirmed to CBC News animals were killed for the film but said one animal was already dead and two others were already destined to be butchered for beef jerky.

Possible cover-up

The New York Daily News is reporting Scott attempted to cover up the events surrounding the bison's deaths.

"John told the butcher not to put his name on the paperwork for the buffalo because he knew that it could get traced back by animal rights activists," production employee Dwight Beard told the news agency.

"This was the answer I got when I asked why the butcher put his own name down for the buffalo even though John owned them. These guys all know it's wrong so they are trying to be arm's length away."

If wrongdoing can be proven, the AHA says it will not certify "The Soultrean." If laws have been broken police will be notified.

Hunting in Alberta

Typically, hunters in Alberta are required to hold a hunting license and complete an education course, or be accompanied by a certified guide.

Hunters also require a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) card that allows the province to confirm eligibility. It is required in order to purchase all fishing and hunting licenses in the province.
