October is a distinguished division the Canadian calendar. Usually, beyond the reach of September’s lingering warmth and not quite into the chill of November, it's a month hanging in limbo between the summer that has passed and the winter that's yet to come. The foliage around us is set alight with vibrant shades of gold, deep crimson and bronzy green. Dressing for weather that walks the dividing line between two seasons can pose a sartorial conundrum, but stick with our October essentials below and you’ll be prepared for whatever Mother Nature has planned!

The weather this weekend is set to span highs of 10-15°C across different parts of the country, ranging from variable sunshine to showers. So how does one dress to prepare for this all-encompassing range of conditions? A poncho is the ideal solution for in-between weather— it offers warmth with its blanket-like embrace, and keeps you nice and cozy in the crisp outdoors, while simultaneously providing breathability for the varying degrees of stuffiness when inside.

While ponchos may conventionally conjure up visions of the Old West or of a garbage bag with a circle cut through the top, when designed in luxe fabrications they can actually exude elegance and ladylike polish. As an added bonus, they champion a loose fit, so not to worry if you’re feeling a little bloated après last weekend’s multiple turkey dinners! The cable-knit construction in this ALICE by Temperley turtleneck poncho is the ultimate in preppy poncho-wear. Balance its exaggerated silhouette with a pair of slim pants—we love these Michael Kors Faux-Leather-Panel Riding Pants in a rich chocolate brown.

Add a hint of edginess with Shoe Cult’s Kade Cutout Booties in olive faux snakeskin with gunmetal buckles; their ankle cutout are also great to accommodate fluctuating forecasts—simply wear with a pair of tights when the temperature dips. Complement their colouring with the iridescent copper leather of a classic Alexander Wang Rockie Duffel, which will add to the rock 'n' roll vibe with its stud detailing.

This palette of cream, brown, burnt orange and green is somewhat indigenous to seventies styling, so we recommend delivering full-out Jackie O. glamour with a pair of oversized sunglasses (Tom Ford does glamour like no other), and a statement necklace, such as this bold number from J.Crew, which features decadently hued violet and peach glass crystals set in a Rorschach-like layout.

With these essentials, you’ll be set to soak up what’s left of the month’s golden reign—and, to quote L.M. Montgomery, be glad we live in "a world where there are Octobers."
