Extreme cold warnings issued in southern Ontario

Tuesday, January 13, 2015, 7:05 AM - Tuesday morning was a frigid one across southern Ontario, with core temperatures reaching down to -20oC in some areas.
Anticipation of those bone-chilling conditions prompted both Hamilton and Toronto to issue extreme cold weather alerts Monday, with Environment Canada following suit by issuing extreme cold warnings across the south from Kingston and Peterborough through to London, including most of the GTA.
Those were still in effect as the sun rose Tuesday, warning of wind chill values of -30, although Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says they are likely to drop in the mid-morning.
"Cold core temperatures this afternoon, but little wind to speak of, so wind chills will not be a big factor for us today," Hamilton says.

Monday night was the coldest it will get this week. Toronto is looking at a daytime high of -10oC Tuesday, feeling colder then -15 with the wind chill, but a progressive warm-up to above-seasonal is in the cards, with some cities even creeping up past the freezing mark by the weekend.
"Saturday is our opportunity for a one-day warm-up," says Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham.
Precipitation-wise, though parts of the region picked up a few centimetres of snow Monday, and light snow may come off of Lake Huron Tuesday morning, there's little snow in the forecast for most areas.
"Two clippers track north of the GTA through until the weekend, bringing just modest snows to the north. No accumulation for southern Ontario as of now," Hamilton says.

Southern Ontario isn't the only region of Canada that's dealing with frigid temperatures this week.
Prairie residents woke up to a deep freeze Monday morning, with temperatures feeling close to -45 in parts of Saskatchewan and Winnipeg, and temperatures are expected to be cold on the East Coast Tuesday.
