A powerful Nor'easter swept through Atlantic Canada Wednesday dumping close to 40 cm of snow on parts of the Maritimes.

Charlottetown, P.E.I saw the heaviest amounts with 37.4 cm recorded.

The storm also produced high winds and widespread blowing snow for Nova Scotia, P.E.I and southeastern New Brunswick.

"The snow started falling in the early morning hours on Wednesday and it didn’t stop until a lull in the midday, but once the winds picked up again, all that snow was blowing around creating zero visibility and plenty of headaches for drivers," said The Weather Network's Nathan Coleman who was in Halifax Wednesday.

The storm cancelled flights and shut down businesses, universities and colleges as road crews worked in blinding conditions.

At one point, city buses were pulled off the road in Halifax because of the blowing snow and poor visibility.

"I've been waiting 15 minutes for a bus that said it’d be there in 5 minutes so I decided to just trek it," one brave resident said.

Most of the snow fell later in the day, leaving many residents waiting the storm out at home.

As Maritimers continue to dig out, some students are getting another snow day.

Several schools remain closed on Thursday as roads remain snow covered and slick.

Officials at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport also warn that Thursday will be a "catchup day" after most flights were grounded due to powerful winds and blizzard conditions on Wednesday.
