Only seven days after her first birthday, six-year-old Brynn Reed's father passed away in a train accident.
Reed and her sister, 11-year-old Delaney Holmes, have since started a special birthday ritual. Every year, for Reed and Delaney's birthday, the girls release a balloon in memory of their late father. This year, they attached their address on Reed's balloon and received an unexpected surprise.
Two months after releasing the balloon, Reed received a white envelope in the mail. A family from Logansport, Indiana - who live approximately 500 kilometres away - sent a letter to Reed wishing her a happy birthday. According to Jamie Diercks, Reed's mother, the balloon landed on the family's porch.
"It was a sign from Andrew that [the letter] came back to us that he is still watching over us all the time, like I always tell Brynn that he is," said Diercks.
"We were just really, really happy and I felt like this is something positive to focus on," she added, thanking the anonymous family for sending the note.
"I'm thankful that I got the balloon back," Reed added.
