Thursday, February 8, 2018, 10:11 AM - Another blast of heavy snow forced school cancellations across New Brunswick on Thursday, while rainfall warnings in Nova Scotia have been replaced by special weather statements for a steady drop in temperatures. Heavy rain spreads across the South Coast of Newfoundland before cold air returns again.

Weather highlights

  • Special weather statements issued in Nova Scotia warning of a rapid drop in temperatures Thursday, turning standing water to ice.
  • Heavy snow closes schools across New Brunswick with up to 25 cm possible for central regions through Thursday.
  • Between 20-40 mm of rain set for Newfoundland's South Coast, as strengthening southerly winds bring rising temperatures. Cold air makes quick return to the region.

As temperatures begin to fall below the freezing mark across Nova Scotia on Thursday, there's a risk for slippery and hazardous travel conditions following a Texas Low, which brought widespread snow and rain to the Maritimes.

"Areas with residual water from the rain earlier this morning will likely see roads and sidewalks become slippery and hazardous," Environment Canada warns.

Heavy snow forced school cancellations across New Brunswick Thursday morning after 20+ cm fell through Thursday morning.

Newfoundland Impact

Some snow begins early Thursday morning from west to east, with snowfall continuing across western, central and northern Newfoundland on Thursday. The Avalon, Burin and Bonavista will see light snow accumulation before a dominant change to rain on Thursday.

"Rain, at time heavy, will spread across the South Coast this morning as strengthening southerly winds bring rising temperatures," says Environment Canada in a rainfall warning issued Thursday morning. "The rain will taper off again this afternoon or evening, with colder air quickly returning."

Familiar pattern: Temperature roller coaster + active pattern with messy systems

A brief shot of Arctic air follows this system, with a weaker system set to bring messy weather to the southern Maritimes on Saturday.

"A more significant and messy system expected for Sunday and into Monday (two rounds of precipitation) with the threat for a swath of freezing rain for southern New Brunswick and northern Nova Scotia," says Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham. "It's a storm track further south than most of the recent systems, so frozen precipitation is likely further south."
