Saturday, August 18, 2018, 1:44 PM - A low pressure system tracking through the Maritimes will continue to push eastward, bringing heavy rain with up to 100 mm expected over parts.

Rainfall warnings remain in effect Saturday in New Brunswick for Moncton, Saint John, and areas along the Fundy coast. The warnings also stretch across Prince Edward Island and a large swath of Nova Scotia.

More on the weekend forecast, PLUS a look at the dominant warming pattern into September, below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Rainfall warnings remain in effect Saturday for Fundy Shores, P.E.I., and Nova Scotia
  • Hardest hit areas include Cape Breton, with up to 100 mm of rain expected
  • Warming trend returns into mid next week

RAINFALL WARNINGS ISSUED

"Rain, at times heavy, will continue to spread eastward through the day, then taper to scattered showers tonight," says Environment Canada in the warning for Nova Scotia. "Total rainfall amounts of 50 to 100 mm are expected over parts of the warned regions, with the highest amounts forecast for Cape Breton."

"Minimal impact for Newfoundland on Sunday, with 15-35 mm of rain on the Avalon from north to south," says The Weather Network meteorologist Nadine Hinds-Powell.

A widespread rain and thunderstorm risk has lingered over Atlantic Canada for the past few days, helping to cut the humidity and sending temperatures to more seasonal values.

Fortunately, the whole weekend won't be a washout for the Maritimes, with a return to fair weather expected by Saturday night or early Sunday, and a warming trend into next week.

BELOW: Timing of weekend rain for Atlantic Canada

"Mostly sunny and cool weather early next week, but warming trend into midweek," says The Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham. "Next system expected mid/late week, with a period of showers and thunderstorms along a front. Warm pattern as we head into next weekend, but a quick shot of cooler weather is possible for Newfoundland and especially Labrador."

According to Gillham, a "very warm pattern is expected to dominate for the final week of August and into early September."
