Alberta oilsands a focal point in DiCaprio's latest doc

Friday, October 28, 2016, 3:38 PM - Canadian oilsands are set to take the stage on Sunday as a key focal point in Leonardo DiCaprio's new climate change documentary, Before the Flood.

The film's director, Fisher Stevens, told press at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September that he was "really horrified" at the sight of northeastern Alberta's oilsands.

"Look, we all want work, we all need jobs — God knows. And it would be great if it was like: ‘Now, we take all of these people and we replant all of that forest.’ Wouldn’t that be amazing?" Stevens told the press at TIFF.

Before the Flood features DiCaprio's travels to various continents, during which he interviewed various politicians, religious figures, scientists, and activists.

The actor produced the documentary, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. It will be screened in 171 countries on the National Geographic Channel on Oct. 30 -- intentionally debuting ahead of the U.S. presidential election.

"The Senate and the Congress, as you see in the film, is full of people on the payroll of the fossil fuel industry, and [who] are worried that they’re going to lose their seats if they push the climate agenda," Stevens told The Canadian Press.

"We’re not trying to preach to the converted. That wasn’t our interest. We want to make a cool film, a film that people really drink in."
