Tuesday, April 21, 2015, 6:51 AM - A new species of glassfrog called Hyalinobatrachium dianae (H. dianae) has been discovered on the Carribbean slopes of Costa Rica. That in itself is exciting -- but what makes this find even more interesting is the fact  that it bears a close resemblance to Kermit the Frog.

The frog, which has been named after the senior author in the study Janet Diane Kubicki, was spotted at three different sites between 400 and 900 metres above sea level.

Counting H. dianae, Costa Rica now has 14 known glassfrog species.

The frog has a translucent belly that makes its internal organs visible, and big, white eyes that bear a close resemblance to one of the world's most famous Muppets.

Scientists say its call sounds more like an insect than a frog.

The last time a glassfrog species was noted in the area was in 1973.
