Icy morning leads to pileups on Highway 2 south of Red Deer, Alta.
At least one of the collisions involved a serious injury, the RCMP confirmed
A multi-vehicle pileup closed down a stretch of Highway 2 Friday morning as snow and ice led to multiple collisions involving several semis and cars.
At least one of the collisions involved a serious injury, the RCMP confirmed, although details were still limited by 11:30 a.m. MST.
At around 9 a.m. RCMP issued an advisory urging drivers not to travel on the highway between Airdrie and Red Deer, citing “very poor” driving conditions and multiple accidents.

Shortly later, police said the southbound stretch of the highway between Olds and Disbury was impassable due to several accidents in the area. Police also issued a towing advisory, telling drivers in the area not to bother calling tow trucks as they would be unable to access stranded vehicles.

By just after 11 a.m, RCMP said northbound traffic was again moving through the stretch, albeit slowly.
At 11 a.m., an RCMP spokesperson said she was unable to confirm exactly how many vehicles had been involved in collisions Friday morning, only that there were “numerous” accidents.

RCMP-supplied photos show a buildup of ice on the highway. Fog also hampered visibility in the region on Friday morning.
