Weather brief: Cross-country thunderstorm risk

Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 6:27 AM - The vast majority of Canadians are in for hot and relatively muggy conditions Wednesday -- and that means heightened thunderstorm risk.

Here's your cross-country roundup for Wednesday.

Atlantic Canada

  • Maritimes: Temperatures will remain warm, though falling closer to seasonal levels by the end of the work week. Thunderstorm risk in northern New Brunswick Wednesday. Thursday to Friday looks unsettled, with some storm chance each day, especially in New Brunswick (though likely just showers for Nova Scotia).
  • Newfoundland: Showers leaving the St. John's region in the morning, after a high of 24oC on Tuesday.

SUMMER FORECAST: Join The Weather Network on June 1 at 9 p.m. ET on television and online for the 2015 Summer Weather Forecast to find out where in Canada will be hotter than normal, who will be cooler, where will be drier and who will be wetter.

Here's a preview of how we predict summer weather three months on advance.

Ontario and Quebec

  • Ontario: Lingering showers around the GTA in the morning. Storms possible in the afternoon along the 401 corridor, up towards Cottage Country and the Ottawa Valley. Main concern is a squall line poised to move across southern Ontario later in the afternoon. Heavy rains and strong winds the greatest threats. Isolated severe chance in the Windsor area.
  • Quebec: "Arguably the best chance of a severe thunderstorm in the country today," Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says. Strong storms could form in the south by the mid-Afternoon. Thunderstorm watch already in place for the Eastern Townships.

Western Canada

  • Prairies: General risk of thunderstorms for northern Alberta and Saskatchewan, with the risk migrating south in the evening and overnight, as far down as Calgary. Fire bans remain in place across Saskatchewan and Alberta. Winds pick up Thursday out of the north, as a cold front extends down across the Prairies, bringing colder air and gusty winds.
  • British Columbia: More storm risk inland, as a new low moving down from Alaska is likely to enhance thunderstorms at higher elevations. Temperatures reach the low 30s in the Southern Interior over the coming days.
