Tuesday, May 26, 2015, 5:13 PM - Slamming on the brakes to allow a squirrel to cross the road has led to a multi-vehicle car crash in Nanaimo B.C.

And police are taking the opportunity to warn motorists that braking on highways when cars can be travelling up to 110 km/h is dangerous and can cause a serious collision. In December, this Quebec woman was sentencing to 90 days in jail for causing a fatal accident stopping for ducks.

In Nainamo on Friday, a food truck hit a car and two pickup trucks after the 53-year-old car driver hit slammed on the brakes to let a squirrel zip past two lanes of traffic, according to the RCMP.

One of the vehicles involved in the accident was so damaged it needed to be towed.

Officials had to close the highway during the morning rush to clear away debris.
