Have you ever wondered? With the cycle of the phases of the Moon lasting approximately one month, and there being 12 months in a year, we typically have 12 full moons each year. This falls some way short of the 365/366 days in a calendar year, therefore, roughly every two and a half years a 13th full moon is seen, commonly called a Blue Moon, and this also refers to a second full moon in the same month. About every 19 years, the opposite occurs, in that February will not have a full moon. This is referred to as a black moon. Each moon of the year has its own name and connotations depending on the season. Traditionally, April's is called the Pink Moon, this full Moon is also the Paschal Full Moon this year. April’s full Moon rises on the night of Saturday, April 16. For the best view of this spring Moon, find an open area and watch as the Moon rises just above the horizon, at which point it will appear its biggest and take on a pinkish or maybe a golden hue! Atmosphere has a big effect.
