Penguin gets handmade wetsuit after feather loss

Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 7:39 PM - A video of a cute little penguin in her custom-built wetsuit is garnering thousands of views online.
The 26-year-old Adelie penguin named Wonder Twin lives at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida and suffers from feather loss, which can happen to the cold climate birds in their natural habitats, according to SeaWorld staff. The problem is, Wonder Twin struggled to regulate her body temperature. Feathers are responsible for keeping penguins warm and losing them can be detrimental to their health.

Seaworld's aviculturist team set out to help the penguin by turning to the park's costume department to create a made-to-measure neoprene jacket to mimic Wonder Twin's real coat.
"We care for each of the penguins individually, so being able to make that kind of a difference for her is really cool," said SeaWorld's aviculturist TJ Dray.
In her wetsuit, Wonder Twin is able to swim, sleep and eat alongside her fellow penguins. SeaWorld's staff says the penguin may grow her feathers back eventually, but in the meantime, the special suit will keep her insulated.
Thanks for keeping our hearts warm Wonder Twin.
