Arthur slams U.S. Gulf states, leading to road closures, power outages

While some roads were closed prior to and after the storm, a number of roads would have been impassable and unsafe for travel while the storm made landfall.

Tropical Storm Arthur made landfall on Wednesday in Texas, weakening from a tropical storm to a post-tropical cyclone.

Arthur moved northeastward and dissipated late Wednesday night in southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana.

The storm brought heavy rain, major flooding and strong winds that damaged property, made roads impassable, knocked down trees and produced widespread power outages. Eastern parts of the state are still experiencing strong storms.

Remnants of Arthur are expected to move northeastward across the southeastern U.S. and enter the Atlantic on Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

As it moves, torrential rain, flash flooding and severe thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes are possible into Friday.

Approximately 39,520 residents are without power in Louisiana after heavy rain and strong winds from Tropical Storm Arthur.

These parishes report the most power outages, according to United States Power Outage Map:

  • Jefferson: 18,519

  • Terrebonne: 8,800

  • St. Tammany: 4,327

  • Lafourche: 1,986

  • Orleans: 1,947

  • Tangipahoa: 904

  • St. John the Baptist: 552

  • St. Charles: 482

  • St. Bernard: 210

  • Livingston: 172

Are some roads still closed in Louisiana after flooding, fallen trees?

The day before Tropical Storm Arthur made landfall, a number of Louisiana roads were closed because of heavy rains. Three roads were closed in Rapides Parish on Tuesday, but were later opened the evening of the same day.

While some roads were closed prior to and after the storm, a number of roads would have been impassable and unsafe for travel while the storm made landfall. This is because flash flooding can happen suddenly, with depths of water accumulating rapidly.

  • A number of road closures are being lifted after heavy rain and damaging winds led to fallen trees, storm debris and high water levels. Here are the most recent updated closures, according to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development:

  • Drawdown gate at Bundick Lake in Beauregard Parish: Now open after recorded water level of 98.1 feet.

  • LA 74 Westbound, LA 928 Westbound in Ascension Parish: Now open after fallen trees were cleared.

  • Southbound Lane Closure on LA 37 (Greenwell Springs Road): Open after emergency closure to repair the crossdrain from washing out due to adverse weather.
