
PHOTOS: Waterspout, funnel clouds reported across southern Ontario
A round of thunderstorms produced a waterspout and led to several reports of wind damage across Ontario on Wednesday.
Wednesday saw another round of active weather across southern Ontario, spawning a waterspout over Lake Huron, funnel clouds over eastern Ontario, and scattered reports of wind damage throughout the region.
The day didn’t appear to be terribly conducive to severe weather from the outset. Computer models underestimated the strength of the instability and wind shear present over southern Ontario on Wednesday, which allowed the afternoon storms to thrive and turn severe in some spots.
One storm produced a waterspout over eastern Lake Huron on Wednesday afternoon. Multiple folks around Sauble Beach witnessed the impressive sight as the shadowy waterspout kicked up a large cloud of mist at its base. Wind damage was also reported near Sauble Falls Provincial Park.
Farther east, vigorous thunderstorms swept through portions of eastern Ontario. Residents reported large hail and strong winds across the area, including some damage near Kingston.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued numerous tornado warnings across eastern Ontario into the early evening hours as storms tapped into wind shear and developed rotation. Some folks on the ground reported seeing rotation and funnel clouds on the tornado-warned storms.
