The environment that delivered Saturday's nocturnal thunderstorms on the eastern Prairies spills into Sunday and could linger into the work week for parts of the region. As well, a ridge of high pressure moving northward from the U.S. is sending temperatures soaring, with heat warnings in place in southern Alberta. The heat will continue to expand in the region this week. The threat for severe weather will linger on the eastern Prairies on Monday, as well. Details on the Sunday and Monday storm potential, and the rising heat, below.

### __Sunday: Storm risk reappears after early-morning cluster moves through__

After an early-morning round of severe thunderstorms rolled through the eastern Prairies, prompting warnings and perhaps an unwelcome wake-up call, they may surface again Sunday afternoon and evening.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible in Saskatchewan and Manitoba through the afternoon and evening, likely along the border of the two provinces. Some of them may reach severe criteria in a swath from northern Saskatchewan to southwestern Manitoba. A non-severe storm risk bextends from northeastern B.C. to northwestern Ontario.

Large hail and frequent lightning remain the largest threat Sunday. There is also a non-zero chance of one or two supercells developing along the Yellowhead Highway in southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba, hugging the border of both provinces.

The storms are being initiated by a warm front, extending from the northern Prairies, where a low-pressure system is riding the building ridge and heat. 

Temperatures across the Prairies are experiencing unusually high temperatures with some areas' thermometers reading 5-7°C above seasonal. Heat warnings are in effect in southern Alberta including in Calgary, Alta., and may expand this week as the heat shifts east.

- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
- Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
- Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
- Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.

### __Monday and beyond: Storm threat shifts as rising heat will blanket the Prairies__

The building ridge of high pressure nosing northward from a U.S heat dome will return temperatures into the mid-to-high 30s during the work week across the region, but also is slowly advancing the disturbance responsible for the latest rounds of storms eastward.

The thunderstorm risk will shift east on Monday, allowing the opportunity for thunderstorm development across a broader region of southern Manitoba, extending west into southeastern Saskatchewan. Because of the system's sluggish nature, severe risks may linger into Monday and Tuesday for Manitoba.

The ridge will bring high heat to the provinces and is expected to last most of the week. The southern Prairies can expect a long duration stretch of high temperatures in the 30s.

The extent of the 30-degree daytime highs could start to approach monthly record territory for Medicine Hat, Alta., as the Prairies head through the middle of the month.
