LISTEN: Rare thundersnow loudly rumbles over Amarillo, Texas

Wind, snow and thundersnow whip through northern Texas Thursday

Amarillo, Texas, was hit with a rare and early snowstorm on October 24 as heavy snow and powerful winds dropped visibility to near whiteout conditions through the day.

Social media quickly erupted with snowy autumn scenes, as residents posted their pumpkins and Halloween decorations fully covered in the heavy, wet snow.

Some people were even able to capture "thundersnow," also known as a winter thunderstorm, as loud rumbles of thunder strangely accompanied this early season snowfall.

Thundersnow typically forms in the same way as a summer thunderstorm, but with temperatures cold enough that the precipitation falls as snow instead of rain. It is however, a pretty rare occurrence, which is why there is always so much buzz around the term.

From snow to tropical moisture? The U.S. National Hurricane Center is currently watching a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico, which became a tropical depression Friday morning.

Some additional strengthening is expected later Friday, but whether it briefly becomes Tropical Storm Olga or not, a cold front merging with the tropical moisture threatens potential flooding rains for southeastern sections of Texas through the early part of the weekend.

The track of this system will also have an impact on the weather here at home, bringing a hefty helping of rain to the Great lakes region through early Sunday.
