Rain, strong winds, and mild temperatures ahead for Atlantic Canada

Strong winds and rain target Atlantic Canada early next week, as temperatures soar into the double-digits for some.

Soak up the dry conditions this weekend while you can, as another system takes aim at Atlantic Canada for early next week.

While a typical mid-December storm would usually entail some sort of discussion around snow for the region, that won't be the case this time around.

Abnormally strong high pressure over the north Atlantic will draw in warm air, and a low pressure system from the south. This will bring rain, strong wind gusts, and mild temperatures.

Sunday night through Tuesday

The rain will begin late Sunday and continue into Monday, lingering into Tuesday for the Maritimes. It will be a mostly rainy day with some breaks, here and there, and that will limit the amount of rain that will fall.

Between 20-30 mm is expected throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with lesser amounts likely for P.E.I. Some heavier rain could push into western areas that could exceed 30 mm.

With such a strong high pressure over the north Atlantic and a low over Quebec, this increases the pressure gradient. When there is such a large pressure gradient like that, the potential for strong wind gusts increases.

As with the last wind event, 80-100 km/h wind gusts are possible this time around, especially along exposed coastal areas. This increases the potential for power outages Monday evening through Tuesday morning.

A southerly wind will be ushered into Atlantic Canada, bringing several days of above seasonal temperatures.

Seasonal temperatures in the Maritimes range from -2°C to 1°C for this time of year, but come Sunday through Tuesday, mild temperatures will dominate the region and will range from 8-15°C over that four day period.

A second low is expected to develop over the Atlantic and bring more unsettled weather to the region mid and late week, with widespread rain and the risk for heavy amounts as this looks to be a slow moving storm.

Parts of the region to the west of the storm track should see a changeover to ice and snow, as much colder weather spreads in late week and into the weekend.
