Ottawa sets new rainfall record, more on the way to southern Quebec

This July has officially been the wettest month Ottawa has experienced on record.

As southern Ontario dries off, Ottawa has officially just recorded its wettest month on record after slow-moving storms meandered through the region on Tuesday.

A stalled, upper-level trough helped to bring heavy rainfall across southern and eastern Ontario this week. As a result, Ottawa airport set a new record for its wettest month ever recorded (259.9 mm as of July 28), breaking its previous July 2017 record.

Once again, the Ottawa and southern Quebec region may see another day of wet, stormy weather on Wednesday. As a result of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, torrential rain and localized flooding risks are forecast in parts of southern Quebec.

The most serious danger will be if storms frequently pass over the same locations, causing rainfall totals to rapidly rise. Localized flooding, low visibility and dangerous driving conditions are all conceivable.

More rainfall and storms on Wednesday

Showers and heavy rainfall may continue into Wednesday and Thursday, with an increasing chance of lingering, light precipitation during the latter. While it will feel muggy outside, temperatures will actually be at or below seasonal.

Thunderstorms will also be possible again. Severe storms will remain east of the low in a south to north direction. Flooding will remain a concern for the Laurentians and Ottawa Valley.
