Favourable winds and a stalled boundary could lead to wintry conditions around Calgary on Saturday

After a potent storm snarled travel across the Prairies to end the week, we’ll deal with even more snow for parts of Alberta heading into this weekend.

March is Calgary’s snowiest month of the year, after all, so it’s no surprise that we’re dealing with bursts of springtime snow heading into the final weekend of the month.

Bands of snow possible in Alberta’s foothills

A stalled boundary combined with upsloping winds could lead to bands of snow forming throughout Alberta’s foothills during the day on Sunday.

Upsloping occurs when winds blow toward the Rocky Mountains, forcing air upwards and generating the lift needed to spark precipitation.

There’s some uncertainty where these bands will develop, but forecasters can’t rule out the potential for bursts of snow in Calgary proper and throughout surrounding communities.

Alberta snowfall outlook

Persistent bands could lead to 5-10 cm of accumulation for some areas. Heavier totals are possible at higher elevations.

Drivers should prepare for periods of winter travel conditions along the QE2. Make sure you check current highway conditions before heading out on Saturday.
