Alberta faces 100 km/h winds before temperatures soar

Wind warnings cover multiple regions as gusts threaten to reach damaging speeds

Alberta is in for a blustery Sunday, with wind gusts up to 100 km/h in some areas.

A low-pressure system moving across northern Alberta is contributing to strong downslope winds across the province, potentially making travel difficult and causing wind-related impacts throughout the day.

Wind warnings are in effect in several areas, including Calgary, Airdrie, Brooks, Cardston, Cypress Hills, Drumheller, Hinton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Nordegg, Okotoks and Rocky Mountain House.

Strong winds peak Sunday afternoon

Local gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected, with the strongest winds arriving by mid-afternoon. Sustained winds are expected to reach 40 to 60 km/h.

The powerful winds are being fueled by strong upper-level air from a low-pressure system moving out of British Columbia. As some of that energy mixes down to the surface, it will cause strong gusts in southern Alberta.

Once the winds die down, Alberta's weather story becomes much more pleasant.

By Wednesday, temperatures in much of Alberta could be nearly 15ºC above seasonal averages, making it feel more like early October than November. Some favourable locations in southern Alberta may even reach 20ºC this week, which is unusually warm for this time of year.
