It’s February in April across Alberta as cold air reigns
A precipitous temperature drop from the end of last week will see February-like conditions prevail as we head into the new workweek.
The warmer temperatures we enjoyed across Alberta on Friday seem like a distant memory this weekend as colder air descends on the province. Temperatures will continue sliding down as we head into the beginning of the new week. Monday is likely to feel more like early February than mid-April. More on the colder temperatures and when things might warm up, below.
THROUGH NEXT WEEK: IT’LL FEEL MORE LIKE FEBRUARY THAN APRIL
A trough pushing in from the west is responsible for the sudden change we’ve witnessed over the past couple of days.
DON'T MISS: Canada spends the entire spring waiting for it to be spring
Saturday’s highs dropped into the single digits for most folks across Alberta, a far cry from the comfortable 20s we saw on Friday. Conditions will get even cooler Sunday as temperatures drop below seasonal, and we’ll fall even farther by Monday.

An extended period of near- to below-freezing air will arrive in Alberta for early next week. Calgary will struggle to hit the freezing mark on Monday, and by Tuesday, will be sitting at -3°C, a far cry from the city’s typical temperature of about 10°C for the middle of April -- temperatures you’d expect to see in early February instead.
The good news is that cold has a harder time hanging on against the slow but steady advance of warm air as we dive deeper into the spring months. It looks like milder Pacific air will return to the Prairies the week after next.
