It was a slow drive for motorists across southern Ontario Friday morning

Snow pushed into southwestern Ontario late Thursday evening and spread into the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) during the overnight hours, with snowfall rates picking up through dawn.

Around 8 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported at least 25 crashes across the GTA, with some motorists sustaining minor injuries.

“Take it easy,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt cautioned drivers in a Twitter live. “If you can stay home for the morning, let the system pass … the system will move on, the plows will get through, the salt will get put down, the snow will be melted into water and the roads will be in good condition, and you won’t have that risk of running off into the ditch like these other 25 cars right now.”

The bulk of the system will move out of the GTA by Friday afternoon, with amounts of 5-10 cm expected along the 401 corridor by the time all is said and done.

As always, motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and to give snow plow operators the time and space they need to help clear the roads.
