PHOTOS: Stunning rain shaft over GTA as storms track through Ontario
From tornado warnings to torrential rain, the end of the long weekend in Ontario featured some impressive storms, including a rain shaft over the GTA.
The long weekend in Ontario ended on a stormy, yet stunning note as a rain shaft slowly tracked through the GTA during the afternoon hours. A rain shaft is a column of precipitation that is found underneath a convective storm.
The severe weather in southern Ontario was triggered by a stationary boundary that was enhanced by the lake breeze convergence off of Lake Huron and Lake Erie.
Areas from Windsor to the shores of Lake Huron also saw severe thunderstorms that brought thunder, lightning and tornado-warned cells. Environment Canada says that a weather spotter reported a weak tornado north of Mitchell around approximately 12:40 p.m. with associated tree damage.
